I flew the Symphony 1.8 for the first time Saturday in 5 - 10 mph winds and loved it. I have never flown a 2 line kite before, and had about 2 minutes of instruction and went out and did it. The 1.8 is a very nice flying kite. I fell in love right then. I couldn't seem to get the hang of self-launching it though.
On Sunday, I had the chance to fly the Symphony 2.7. The winds were not steady which made it challenging. After watching me crash it for a while, an expert came over and gave me lots of good tips and helped me fly. I finally got the hang of self-launching and the 2.7 ended up being just as fun. I flew it for 4 hours.
Between the two, I went and bought the 1.8. It was easier for a novice to fly, and I plan to take it backpacking, so I chose the lighter of the two. Assuming I get as much use out of it as I expect, I will also get the 2.7 at some point.
I would recommend either kite to a beginner. The larger 2.7 will require more practice to get good, but both are nice to fly in light or moderate winds. The best part is that nothing breaks when you hit the ground hard!
