Air Hogs Sky Shark Replacement Wings Review

First, this toy is almost foolproof but not quite. Like any flying toy, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Before attempting powered flight, hand launch it like a glider to see what adjustments need to be made to keep it balanced. Remember, toy airplanes fly just like real ones. If you try to fly it right out of the box without proper preparation, the results would be the same if you hopped in a jet to fly it with no experience. After playing with it for about 30 minutes, we launched it under full power and were amazed.
The aircraft looked and sounded like the real thing and we ended up with every kid within a mile wanting to watch. It spiraled upwards and outward in an expanding radius. (be sure you have a large treeless park or cow pasture as we did). When the air ran out, the skyshark remained stable and made a better landing than some airliners I have been on.
It takes a little getting used to in order to launch. On occasion the prop will run in reverse but is easily stopped and restarted correctly.
I bought this for my 5 year old niece who already had a RC blimp (my favorite for inside flight) and she loved it. It is more suited for 10 and over, but with adult supervision is a really fun toy for kids to learn about aviation science and the forces that allow powered flight.
I am a retired employee of a major airline, licensed pilot with over 5,000 flight hours heavy jet and I had as much fun with this toy as the kids did... in fact, I bought myself one to play with too. I highly recommend this safe, fun toy.

Nova Design Airglider 40 - Blue/Orange Review

The airglider 40 is a very well made glider. It goes together well but don't be put off by the bending you have to do to give the wings their dihedral. It flies well using the rubber band launcher outdoors and flies well indoors by just tossing it. I wasn't able to figure how to adjust the flight path by adjusting the wings. One thing you shouldn't do is to try and use two people to launch the glider - one to hold the launcher and the other to launch the glider. The glider's tail struck the plastic handle and broke the receptable that holds the rear stabilizers. I used epoxy and repaired it - although not perfectly. The repair worked pretty well and I got it flying again.
The wings are curved into a dihedral by tensioning 30-50# kite line. (I'm guessing the pound strength of the line.) It broke somehow so I measured the old line and cut a length to repair it. I put the kite line through a needle, threaded it through the wing holes, looped it at the end like the original and re-created the tensioning. I experimented with the adjustments on the leading and trailing edges and finally got it right.
It's a neat toy for the adult who remembers the cheap balsa flyers of our youth because it really sails! But I'm not sure it's a great toy for a child because you DO have to be somewhat careful that you don't subject it to too much abuse. It's pretty sturdy considering the materials used (carbon fiber, quality nylon fabric, and spectra type of kite line) but it's not indestructible.)
Nova Design makes good stuff and this is a quality toy for someone who appreciates thoughtful design.

Introducing a completely new concept in model airplanes -- The sail tension of the Airglider 40 is made of tear-resistant Spinnaker cloth and the frame is made of fiberglass and carbon fiber, making it much more stable than comparable wood or foam airplanes.-- The Airglider 40 is visually appealing due to its filigree bracings and it has great potential for experiments such as flying around a curve by turning the wing and altering the center of gravity by adding or removing ballast.-- The Airglider 40 flies best in no wind or very light wind. You can have fun practicing the different launch methods. The "Ground Launch" uses a rubber band catapult to achieve the great starting height -this send off is spectacular and dynamic. The "Sidearm Launch" is a new sporty launch technique that you can use to catapult the Airglider 40 as well as a discus into the air!-- The Airglider 40 is easy to assemble and includes a detailed manual.Get yours today and start flying! -- For Ages 3+.

WowWee Bladestar Flame Indoor Flyer Review

WowWee Bladestar Flame Indoor Flyer

This is a flying machine unlike anything you've ever seen before. It's not an airplane, it's not a helicopter, it's not an autogyro, it's not an ornithopter with flapping wings. It's a powered maple seed. I'd have never thought of it, and you probably wouldn't have either, but the Wowwee designers did, and they deserve lots of credit for this masterpiece of out-of-the-box thinking.
I read about it in the magazine of an engineering society that I belong to, and the reviewer couldn't figure out what kind of "control equation" allowed an object with no non-rotating reference elements -- everything on the Bladestar spins -- to operate under directed flight. He must have come from the same aeronautical tradition as the ones that proved that a bumblebee can't fly. (We now know that insects use nonlinear "unsteady flows" to gain more lift than traditional aerodynamic equations provide for.)
While the Bladestar employs "AI" according to its advertising, it's not as smart as a bumblebee. But it can successfully avoid light-colored objects under good conditions. In the jargon of AI research this is called situationist autonomous control. If the room you're flying it in has dark walls like my living room, you'll have to guide it away from them yourself. The blades do collect dings if you fly it into hard objects, but the wingtips are covered with heavy foil that you can smooth out and it's nearly as good as new.
It naturally hovers very stably, so you might expect it to respond to the controls like a UFO in a video game, but no, this is a real flying object with gyroscopic effects when it tilts to move sideways. It takes a little bit of practice to learn to anticipate these movements and coordinate the controls appropriately. I was practicing landing on target after about 5 flights.

Bladestar is a revolutionary indoor flying machine that changes helicopter flight as we know it. This is the first flying toy with a sensor-based navigation that enables it to glide itself through the air as it avoids ceilings and other obstacles. Alternatively you can control it with the three-channel digital IR controller, and with the dogfight accessory attached you can face-off two bladestars to see who will win. When you notice power loss, simply recharge right from the controller. Made from light "high-flex" materials and designed to be crash-resistant, Bladestar is built for indoor flight. Requires 6 "AA" batteries, not included.
